Life Unemployed 2010: Boston, Peru, Kentucky, Europe

The Kentucky Stage
20-23 August 2010

Sore thumbs, unknown muscles talking loudly… definitely the signs of over-wii action and my accomplices are two little boys who never seem to run out of energy, unlike their Tatie Janique who needs frequent water breaks.

I usually visit the Cassidy’s household around January/February but since I am not sure when I will be back to the US, I thought I would drop by a second time this year and discover Kentucky in the summer. Beautiful, hot and hot!

It is always fun to hang around five-year olds and see the world from their eyes – they are at the stage when there is a LOT of Why’s, and frankly too many things really don’t make sense! It also feels good to care for someone else for a change, look after Sean and Thomas as they are crossing streets, buckling their seat belts, brushing their teeth, and playing softly.

Of course, when they beat you (badly) at bowling (the real deal not the wii version, which would have been softer on my right arm!), the ego remembers longingly the days when it is all alone and unbruised. There is a solution: get their father to put on the bumpers on each side and then I crushed all three of them… and David’s ego was getting blue. Ha!

It was also good to catch up with Virginie, my “oldest” friend on this side of the ocean – 11 years and hopefully the distance won’t matter in the future. I have a standing invitation to return to Georgetown, KY. They said I can just call from Lexington’s Blue Grass Airport and they’ll pick me up!

That is definitely what I will miss the most from this country: all the wonderful friendships, old and new. These past weeks, I have tried to reach out to meet as many friends as possible. It has been overwhelming: there are amazingly kind and generous people out there and they want to be friends with me! Not only that, they offer their homes, their closets for my stuff, and even their network around the world wherever I decide to rest my roots next. Overwhelming kindness that I have… I don’t know, missed, dismissed, ignored for a long time? Anyway, the feeling stay with me as I am getting ready to pack my essentials, empty my apartment and close this chapter.

Washington welcomed me back tonight with nice weather and I took the long way home (good old metro instead of a cab). I will miss the city too… but I still have a week!!!
