My Adventures in Malawi

CHAPTER FOUR — 9/28/2007 — The Media

The Good News: power has been restored and since Wednesday CNN International has been steadily feeding my news addiction (no Swiss chocolate in Malawi and Cadburry is not something you can get addicted to, in my Swiss opinion…). So I know all about Burma, and the UN Summit, and the mysterious pirates, and the bad weather in, well, the world, and the rapping Swiss firefighters, and the US’s historic loss in China against Brazil (4-0!!), and…

What? A question in the room? You have never heard of Swiss firefighters rapping their heart out to save lives? Prepare to be enlightened and please sit down:

The Bad News: I was hounded by two reporters yesterday, with follow-up questions on a World Bank’s reponse I had sent them on Wednesday, which took 2 days to get out of operations staff! The Country Manager was of course unreachable somewhere in the North of the country, but I assured them he would get back to them on Friday. I asked not be quoted since the response came from 4 different people and all I did what click on SEND. Well, one of them waited, the other one didn’t…

Breathe in. Breathe out.

More Bad News: I must have gained weight because the owner of the Greenhouse suggested this morning that he installs a torture machine under a tree or in my room for me… I think it’s like when someone offers you a mint, it’s a clue and you should NOT refuse. So I said, “Sure thanks, in my room would be nice.” (under a tree?!)

Well, of course, no more walking to work, no more yoga, no more Billy Banks AND when I got back to my room on Tuesday, I found a box of cheese crackers and four boxes of cookies. I thought it was a mistake and didn’t touch them. But on Wednesday, a staff told me he had put them there for me… What is a hungry & stressed-out squirrel to do? Dig in!!!!!!!!!! Plus the owner insists that I eat more in the morning and now I get two strawberry yogurts! Snacks snacks snacks, I live on snacks.

To end on Good News: Thank George it’s FRIDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Did you hear that my George was hurt in an accident? The skinny top model didn’t get seriously injured… oh no, I said I wanted to end on good news!

aha

PS – Monday Oct. 1: Weeeeeeelllllll, the second reporter who was hounding me on Thursday struck on the weekend, and the CM was not very happy with me on Monday 😦
